It is important that children and young people develop personal safety skills from a well-presented and well-structured personal safety program. Protective Behaviours develops personal safety skills that can be used by children, young people and adults to keep them safe and work towards reducing violence and abuse in the community.

Over recent years there has been an increased awareness of all aspects of children's safety, particularly that of personal safety. The following statistics, however, tell a very different story. We now know that a child or young person is more likely to be harmed by someone they know.

• Protective Behaviours: About Domestic Violence

  This resource has been developed to help to address issues of domestic violence. The first section includes activities for adults on issues of domestic violence with an emphasis on the needs of women. The second section includes activities for children. Each section has ten parts to cover ideas about joining in group activities, expressing feelings, feeling safe, communicating, trouble in families, troubling feelings and taking a stand against violence. Each section also has evaluation strategies and resources to support the implementation of the materials.

Child Abuse Statistics

Everybody has the right to feel safe all of the time, but unfortunately the following child abuse statistics tell a very different story. Over the past two decades there are been increased awareness over children's personal safety. We now know that a child or young person is more likely to be harmed by someone that they know than by someone that they don’t know.

• In Australia during 2007-2008, there were 317 526 report of suspected child abuse and neglect made to states and territories throughout Australia. (Australian Institute Family Studies 2009)
• 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 7 boys have experienced  some form of unwanted sexual touching. (Australian Institute of Criminology 2000)
• 31% of Australian adults have said that they would not believe a child who disclosed being abused (Australian Institute of Criminology 2006)
• 1 in 4 children have witnessed violence against a parent (NAPCAN)
